I enjoyed working with Damaraland mole-rats – they are very ugly rodents that have a very interesting social system. Like in bees, only one female, the queen, reproduces; all the other animals are either workers or soldiers. They are so ugly that it takes a while to get used to them – they have very large heads, humongous teeth that stick out over their lips, tiny beady eyes and very short legs. I have only worked with them in captivity, and would love to see them in the wild; they come from the south part of Africa.
