If I could only choose one I’d say the amazing people I work with. Conservation attracts people who are both serious about helping to make the world a better place while also being huge amounts of fun. Visiting some amazing places comes a close second. I’ve been really lucky to be able to work in tropical forests in countries such as Madagascar, Ecuador, Honduras and Dominican Republic.
The fact that every day is different. I could be out in the field looking for insects, or observe birds, or teach students, or go to conferences, or travel on field courses, or talk to people about science… This means that the job is never boring.
I’d say it’s the variety. There are so many different things to do, like working in the lab, field work, presentations, demonstrating to undergraduates, writing, reading, etc. The list is endless! So there is no time to get bored.
I love that I get to be outside such a lot. Today, I got to spend the afternoon on a beach looking for seaweed, and got to do it with lots of new friends. We even had cake afterwards! That’s a pretty great job 🙂
My favourite part of my job is the challenge of a new problem! It’s when something I’m working on doesn’t turn out the way I might expect it to, that’s when I ask why, and the best part!
