For about 15 years professionally but it does go back further than that. My love of science goes back to when I was at school. I think if you like asking questions and finding out facts you are well on the way to being a scientist.

If you mean “how long have you been paid to do science”, then the answer is about nine years. If you mean “how long have you been trying to find out more about the world around you”, then it’s much longer – probably since I was a toddler.

Feels like ages! I first started my degree in science 12 years ago, so I would probably say I started properly then. Although it has taken a really long time for me to feel like a proper scientist, because I was so busy learning how to do it. Sometimes I still don’t feel like a real scientist…
But like the others said, science is just about asking questions and finding out answers, so maybe I’ve always been a scientist. Did you know there is a scientific study done by primary school children on what colours bees like? It has been published in a real journal, so all of those children are real scientists. It doesn’t matter what age you are!

Not really – I was very undecided as to what I wanted to do with my life! Up until the very end of high school I could not make up my mind; I thought about studying architecture, or Chinese studies. In the end, my love for animals took over, and I opted for biology – and have not regretted this decision.

Hi @Ashli, No, I didn’t want to be a scientist when I was younger. Science seemed boring when I was at school, and I liked stories much more. It was only when I got older that I realised biology was really interesting, and more importantly, that I could do it! Sometimes you surprise yourself ;-). Do you think you might like to be a scientist?
