That’s a really good question! I’ve often wondered why some people seem to love animals and some don’t. But then I also wonder why some people love ice cream and some don’t!
I fell in love with animals when I was little and had pets: I used to have gerbils (I still have gerbils actually), and loved watching, holding and caring for them. As I got older, I spent more time looking at wildlife rather than pets, and once I started watching, it was impossible to stop. Animals are fascinating, clever, funny, beautiful, gross and spectacular, and the more I know about them, the more I like them.

I like them for two main reasons. Firstly, because they are so diverse – there is basically something for everyone, whether you like sea slugs or gorillas. Secondly, animals can do so many things that we wouldn’t even suspect them of doing. For instance, did you know that mice sing? They really do! But they sing in such a high voice that we can’t hear it – and male mice actually make pretty elaborate songs to attract a girlfriend. How amazing is that?

I think I was born with a love of animals and as I have learnt more about them I now appreciate and value them more. As animals ourselves its easy to recognise things that we have in common with all living things and I guess thats where my original love of animals came from.
